On March 13th my family welcomed another little one.  Isla Jean is Adelyn’s new baby cousin.  She is already a champ at saying “Isla” and loves giving out kisses to her new “bebe”.

Isla you are so beautiful and a part of an extremely loving family.  We can’t wait to watch you grow big, strong, and happy.

I was recently asked what I was most surprised about when I became a mom.  My answer was how magnified everything was.  There weren’t any big surprises but I feel everything was just “more” then I had expected.  Every parent said you love a child in ways that you can’t fathom before you are a parent.  Of course I knew conceptually that I would love my child but the magnitude of my love is far deeper than I imagined.  Another example, of course, is that you get less sleep but I don’t think I grasped just how little.

Another big one was how fast time flies by.  Every parent talks about how quickly time goes with a little one but I had no idea it would speed up this fast.  Adelyn is one!  Literally 12 months ago she was a quiet, cuddly baby in my arms that could barely keep her eyes open and now she is not only walking but running… and eating real food, and saying her first words, and pretending she is a momma to her baby doll.  I can’t even remember what 3 months ago was like.

Some people say that spending money and time on a big birthday bash is excessive but I really like doing something extra special to mark the passage of time to celebrate Adelyn.  I want her to be awe inspired and giddy with excitement all day long.  And to be surrounded by warmth, love and beauty.  This is what I came up with:

Adelyn loves animals – especially the soft cuddly ones – so I decided to have a garden bunny theme with lots of soft neural colors.  The bunnies and balloons gave the event a playful and youthful feel but the overall tone was very sophisticated and elegant.  Garden roses stole the show making appearances not only on the table but as a garland on geronimo balloons, as a cake topper, and on the back of the highchair.  The “Garden Treats” menu added to the festivities and all dishes featured carrots – except for the cottontail macaroons – and provided a light lunch for our guests.

The concept and vision really came together when I started working with Lana Frankel on Adelyn’s invites.  She did a beautiful job hand illustrating everything from the invites to the menus.  Erin with Plum Sage brought my garden vision together with the use of beautiful garden roses and greenery to make creative vocal points for the day.  Calluna Events worked with Chairished Rentals  to create a simple dinner table layout to match the rest of the decor. Mulberries Cake Shop made the tastly carrot cake and Tee & Cakes prepared the vanilla macaroons.

This event is featured on Grey Likes Baby and Mon Be’be’ Che’ri.

In 2013 Kelly and Mike got married and bought a house together – it was a big year for them.  So for their first Valentines as a married couple Kelly wanted to do something extra special for Mike.  Kelly and Mike are one of my 2013 couples so I was so excited with Kelly reached out to me to help her style an intimate photo session and surprise date for the two of them.  I turned to Rachel with Talia Events who assembled an amazing crew to pull the shoot together and we all ran with it.
The vision came together as a woman spending the perfect day preparing for a special date with her husband.  From getting up to adorning the house with flowers, preparing a cake and primping herself in anticipation of her husband’s return home from work. The finale would be Mike coming home to Kelly looking stunning, a table set for two with Rose’ and a freshly baked cake. We decided to incorporate lots of peach into the shoot for a new spin on red which is most common for Valentine’s day.
We start off in the intimate setting of their bedroom where we capture Kelly waking up to a bed strewn with flowers and a love note by Christi of Christi Johnson Calligraphy.  Keegan with Steele the Spotlight makes sure Kelly’s hair and makeup looks flawless as she wakes up and throughout the rest of the day – which is something most woman only dream of.
Then Kelly walks to the local market to purchase, and subsequently, prepare a bouquet of fresh flowers.  Cori and Liz from Cori Cook Floral Design decided to incorporate lots of deep red flowers to balance out and compliment the light peach in the rest of the shoot.
After arranging the flowers Kelly sets to work preparing a cake for her surprise date.  Rachel with Talia Events styled the shoot with props that were modern but with a distinctly nostalgic and romantic feel to them.
The flowers took center stage in the bathroom where Kelly relaxes in the tub.  As if in a dream she gets to bathe surrounded by roses that cascade down the side of her claw foot tub, resembling a huge bath towel draped over the side.
Next, Kelly puts on her make up and gets dressed to surprise Mike.  Every girl’s dream is to have someone like Jill from Common Couture to pick out their wardrobe for them as she has done for Kelly throughout the day. Kelly wanted something flowy to welcome her husband in so it would be something different from her fitted wedding gown and Jill picked out the perfect dress.
It was a day dream of Kelly’s in high school to walk down a grand staircase to meet her handsome date at the bottom and today she gets to see Mike’s awe as she descends in a beautiful gown towards him. After they greet each other, they get to enjoy the beautiful cake Kim and Jake’s Cakes prepared for the shoot.  The perfect cake topper is this very artistic and edible gelatin peach.
For the finale Kelly and Mike share a slow dance in the living room while I captured the sweet moment.  Kelly now has many stunning photos of herself throughout the day to share with Mike.  And, as an unintended perk, enjoyed a day feeling, as she put it, “pampered like a princess”… like every woman should on Valentine’s Day.
